Training aim

To upskill BEng and BSc graduates in the area of Biopharmaceuticals focusing on both upstream and downstream processing.

Learning objectives

This certificate will allow students to attain a knowledge and understanding of the principles of Biopharmaceuctical Processing and it's underpinning science. This course predominately covers both cell culture and purification of Biopharmaceuticals including unit operations, good manufacturing practices, validation and process analytical technology. 

Course outline

This course is delivered one night a week over a full academic year.  CIT has two semesters in its academic year.  Both Semesters consist of 12 weeks lectures,  practical delivery, one week of revision and a week of exams.

Trainer's profile

Dr Sandra  Lenihan  is a lecturer in Department of Process Energy and Transport Engineering, CIT(www.cit.ie/chemeng.staff.sandralenihan).  She lectures on the Chemical and Biopharma Degree programme (Level 8 BEng).  She has lectured upstream & downstream processing since 2009.  She has significant industrial experience -  Eli Lilly, Astellas, Altana Pharma & Gilead Sciences. She is also the Principle Investigator on Powder Modelling for Tabletting - Pharmacuetical Manufacturing Technology Centre

One night a week over a full academic year.

Assessment & certification

Mid semester exam 20%; practicals 30% and final exam 50%

Who should attend

Engineering & science graduates who wish to upskill in biopharmaceuticals. There is a large emphasis on engineering practicals. Guest lectures & site visits are also incorporated into this programme.
