High Voltage Electrical Operations Course

HVOTC is an Irish owned and run limited company established in 1998. We are an independent electrical training provider specialising in competency based High Voltage operational training that is site specific and tailored to the customers requirements. In addition to electrical training HVOTC offers consultancy services in the following areas:

  • H.V. system safety audits.
  • Pre-handover inspections of new/upgraded H.V. systems.
  • Developing and updating high voltage safety rules and procedures.

Training aim

To enable participants to safely operate and manage the high voltage distribution system at their work facility in accordance with current Irish and EU standards.

Learning objectives

  • Introduction and Safety.
  • Schematic Diagram, System Feeding Arrangements and Interface with Supply Authority.
  • HV Switchgear, Circuit Breakers, Isolators, Switches and Transformers.
  • System Protection and Associated Equipment.
  • Identification of Electrical Hazards and use of PPE.
  • Switching and Communication Procedures.
  • Live Switching of Electrical Equipment.
  • Management of the System under Normal and Fault Conditions

Course outline

This training program is aimed at operators (electricians/engineers with the responsibility for the hands on operation of the high voltage equipment) and supervisors/managers that have overall responsibility for the system. The course has common topics but these are individually tailored to suit the customers high voltage system – this is essential as all systems will differ in relation to type of switchgear, circuit breakers & protection devices used and varying system configurations.

Trainer's profile

Richard McDonnell has been involved in the operation and management of high voltage distribution systems since 1998. In 2008 Richard began training for HVOTC in this area and has worked with electricians, technicians and engineers in the pharmaceutical, production, wind, data storage, rail industries and the health services.

Course duration

2 - 5 days depending on system cofiguration

Assessment & certification

Participants will be involved in hands on operation of HV equipment and will also complete a theory based questionnaire.
