Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards deadline fast approaching

08 August 2018 at 10:16

With less than six weeks left until the 10 September entry deadline, Engineers Ireland is calling on engineers and engineering organisations nationwide to submit their entries to the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards, held in association with ESB.

Now in its ninth year, the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards are presented annually in recognition of the achievements of engineers who have demonstrated exceptional engineering skills through their work. As well as identifying leaders within the engineering industry, the awards provide an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the invaluable contribution the engineering profession makes to society and applaud the innovation and quality of work produced by engineers both at home and abroad.

The Engineering Project of the Year, sponsored by Transport Infrastructure Ireland is one of the most hotly contested award categories with the winner decided by a weighted voting process involving an online public vote and a panel of expert judges. This award emphasises the important contribution engineers makes to society and recognises the highest level of achievement in the engineering field. In 2017, the coveted award title went to Malachy Walsh and Partners for the redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh and Centre of Excellence.

In addition to the Engineering Project of the Year Award, categories open for entry include the Geoscience Ireland Award, sponsored by Geoscience Ireland; the Local Authority Engineering Initiative Award;  the Heritage and Conservation Award, sponsored by the OPW, and the Technical Innovation of the Year Award.
Each Regional branch, Engineering division and Society committee of Engineers Ireland are also encouraged to nominate their best presentation for the 2017 – 2018 season in the Best Presentation Award category, co-sponsored by Griffiths and Armour and Beale and Company.

Members of the public are also encouraged to nominate an Irish engineer that you know who has worked or is working on a project outside of Ireland that clearly contributes to society for the International Engineer of the Year Award. Sponsored by ESB International, this award aims to acknowledge the contribution of the Irish engineering diaspora by recognising the excellent work of Irish engineers around the world.

Encouraging organisations from all disciplines of engineering to enter, Caroline Spillane, Director General of Engineers Ireland, said: “The Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards honour the pioneering work that is carried out by Irish engineers both at home and abroad. I would encourage engineers and engineering organisations to celebrate their achievements and submit an entry to the 2018 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards prior to the awards deadline of Monday, 10 September.”

The black-tie Excellence Awards ceremony will take place on Friday, 9 November, where a number of additional category awards will be presented on the evening, including: the ESB Outstanding Contribution to Engineering Award; the Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Award, sponsored by Siemens;  the Chartered Engineer of the Year Award, sponsored by Arup; the CPD Employer of the Year Award, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland; and the President's Award.
