The Director, Process Engineering, in Global Engineering Solutions (GES) will be the primary Subject Matter Expert for core Biologics Drug Substance Processing Unit Operations. Reporting to a Technology Director for Large Molecules, the Director is accountable for successful capital investments supporting World Class Supply in the Biologics area of the business. The director provides technical direction, oversight and feedback to supervise project implementation activities ranging from business case development through the implementation of the business solution. The director applies MSD Capital Management Process and supports Lean methods/assessments. The Director will hold a senior position on the technical development career pathway. As an individual contributor without direct reports the role will foster collaboration with other Integrated Project Team members, plant operations personnel, and outside contractors. The director is able to monitor and appraise the work of project partners (A&E engineering team, contract resources, vendors) in the preparation of project related deliverables. The director also provides technical expertise to business studies, peer projects, and periodic operations investigations. The director is expected to have an advanced knowledge of Industry approaches, ranges of technology solutions, Internal & External Guidance, and Standard Work related to the Biologics area. The director is expected to provide technical coaching to help develop individuals within their influence by broadening their technical knowledge in their respective area(s) of expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert for core Biologics drug substance unit operations and facilities;
  • Leadership for the development of project scope, front-end planning, assuring viability of technology in proposed configuration, evaluation of alternative solutions, and preliminary designs for biological manufacturing facilities;
  • Manages a significant capital project technical scope or a portfolio of technical scopes supporting the Biologics area of business;
  • Ensures that deliverables conform to MSD standards, are technically sound and sufficiently thorough and complete;
  • Develops close working relationships and liaises with other technical functions such as Quality, Operations, Technology, Safety, etc., to ensure successful technology transfer of new and inline products;
  • While maintaining technical ladder, the director will guide the project process engineering team in technical aspects of their work assignments and their technical development.

Base location for this role is flexible within MSD Ireland. The initial assignment for the Director will be overseeing the Process Engineering responsibilities for MSD's new Biotechnology facility in North County Dublin. Travel and flexibility in project assignment location is required; future assignments may require short term travel assignments. Percent of travel is expected to be >25% dependent on project assignments.


  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Pharmaceutical/Biotech/Vaccines industry; inclusive of 7 years in process engineering in Biologics space;
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Biologics drug substance processes, associated equipment unit operations, facilities, and current industry trends;
  • Knowledge of a stage gate process for capital projects;
  • Demonstrated leadership behaviors with experience in providing technical leadership and coaching across multiple locations and countries;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. Ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts in clear and easily understood ways; ability to interface and communicate at all levels (working staff up to senior management) and tailor messaging to the audience to drive desired outcomes;
  • Ability to get results in a cross functional environment and has ability to effectively collaborate with and influence partners and other team leaders.
