Engineers Ireland Promoting Innovation once again with iPhone App School

Release date: Friday, 4 September 2009

Engineers Ireland, the professional members’ body for all qualified engineers in Ireland, launches a course this September that aims to exploit entrepreneurial flair in the software engineering sector.

The course, entitled Developing Business and Personal Applications using the iPhone, is the first software engineering course to be run by Engineers Ireland and as such could be described as expansion into a new area for the organisation.

By way of introduction, Engineers Ireland intends to host a lunch time session in September, where App School founder and former young scientist of the year Patrick Collison will talk about the course and his own background. The talk will concentrate on opportunities for young entrepreneurs, pitfalls to be avoided and how Patrick developed his Wikipedia application.

Patrick is already well known as one of Irelands’ youngest entrepreneurs, appearing on The Late Late Show after selling his company for circa $5 Million in early 2007. Patrick has also developed an encyclopedia app which brings Wikipedia to iPhones without internet connectivity.

According to Patrick: "the iPhone platform is so exciting because it makes it really easy for a small amount of work to turn into a continuous revenue stream. It also provides the perfect platform for entrepreneurial flair with Engineers Ireland aiming to provide a forum for engineers and entrepreneurs to network and communicate together."

A course for developers will be held in Engineers Ireland from September 28th to October 2nd inclusive.
