Abstract
Why has software been so difficult to write well?
This is a question that matters not just to the engineers who design it but to any engineer who uses software, i.e. the entire profession. It will be a central theme in this year’s Presidential Address by Dr. Chris Horn.
After almost 50 years, processes and methodologies have been developed which have enhanced confidence in the quality of software. However, a strong theoretical foundation for its development and maintenance has yet to emerge.
At a time when there is an increasing interest in the regulation of all engineering works to ensure that engineering projects are delivered safely and without risk to the public or to property, can software be safely engineered?
