2008 Engineers Ireland student winner in line for world prize - index
Our Innovative Student of the Year for 2008, Kieran O'Callaghan, has become Ireland's first ever finalist in the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA). The mechanical engineering student travels to Kansas City, Missouri as one of 30 short-listed from an entry pool of 1,500 students worldwide, for the awards which will take place on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The Cork IT student was awarded first place in the Engineers Ireland Innovative Student of the Year in 2008 for his AquaEye project which enables visually impaired swimmers  by automatically warning them of pool wall approach and relaying position with their pool lane.

In 2008, Kieran established Vision Research Enterprises - Vision RE - a machine vision research, development and consultancy company. The company was formed after the success of AquaEye.

The GSEA programme is the premier international entrepreneurial and innovation student award. Kieran will present his business to a panel chosen from over 60 elite judges.

We would like to wish Kieran all the best in the competition.
