Engineers Week is a week long programme of nationwide events with the aim of celebrating the world of engineering. The aim of the week is to create a positive awareness and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession and to raise awareness about engineering as a career. Director General, John Power, An Taoiseach, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D, and President, Chris Horn discuss the importance and relevance of the initiative, and in particular the emphasis on improving the participation and performance of our students in mathematics subjects.

In his speech Mr. Cowen highlights the steps being taken by the innovation task force, that is looking for ways to increase the number of people employed by innovative, export focused companies.

"Enhancing the mathematical ability of our population, is a challenge faced by most developed countries. I do not want Ireland to have to rely on important talent, to become our engineers of the future. We must all work together to impress on students and parents the importance of mathematics education for the jobs of the future, and we must work together to find ways to improve mathematical attainment. I believe that Engineers Ireland has a key role to play in that regard, and I am committed to that agenda."
