Structures & construction Division

The Structures & Construction Division is a dedicated network for engineers working in the contracting/construction sectors.

About

About this network

Our network boasts engineers from consultancy, academia and contracting/construction sectors primarily.  In recent years, we have been trying to attract larger numbers from the construction side through lectures of interest to builders and consulting engineers alike.  We have produced some fine lectures with top class content using this formula and we hope these evenings will provide a platform for engineering professionals to integrate and network more, outside of their normal place of work.

Our committee meetings are well attended and members are proactive in their duties, with everyone contributing to the running of the Division’s activities.

Who can join?

The Structures and Construction network is of particular relevance to those working, studying or researching in the contracting/construction sectors.

However, membership is open to all members of Engineers Ireland.

How to join

If you are already a member of Engineers Ireland, you can join any number of Regions, Divisions and Societies in our Members Area

It is free to join our network, and once you join, you can:

  • Use our discussion forums
  • Post comments on articles and blogs
  • Join the Contacts Network to locate and send messages to other professionals

Events

We run a series of evening lectures each year to promote the latest thinking in construction.

Our 2008/2009 lecture series featured a number of very well attended events including:

  • Challenges facing geotechnical engineers in Ireland
  • The rehabilitation and monitoring of ferrcarrig bridge
  • The Chicago spire
  • The Limerick tunnel
  • Team dynamics

All our events allow members to make contacts and network with their peers and industry representatives, and contribute to their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The majority of our lectures are broadcast live as webcasts on Engineers TV or are available as recordings from the website.

About the Event:
Many buildings constructed in the Dublin area in the last decade have experienced problems related to the use of fill containing pyrite.

In view of this, the 2012 Pyrite Symposium has been organised to assist engineers and lawyers by providing a background to the problems, including an understanding of the cause of the distress, the diagnosis and typical structural damage and the remedial/mitigation measures.  The aim of the one-day conference is to encourage discussion between the professionals involved, particularly with regard to SR21 and the NRA 800 Series.

Trinity College Dublin have kindly agreed to host the symposium on 20th April as part of their Trinity Week activities.
