South-East region

The South East Region covers Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Tipperary.

About

About the region

The South-East Region organises a variety of educational and social events each year which create networking opportunities for members.

We also organise site visits which offer members an insight into different engineering disciplines and significant engineering projects taking place within the region.

We have developed strong links with higher education institutions, including Waterford IT and IT Carlow, evidenced by their provision of webcasting support for our evening lectures and their involvement in key Engineers Ireland events, including:

  • Engineers Week
  • Regional KNEX challenges

Who can join?

Membership is open to members from all grades of Engineers Ireland and from all engineering disciplines

  • Engineers and engineering technicians working in the region
  • Engineering consultancies and support servicing companies
  • Local government and semi-state organisation workers involved in engineering
  • Academic researchers, lecturers and students

How to join

If you are already a member of Engineers Ireland, and gave a correspondence address in Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford or South Tipperary when you joined, you have automatically been affiliated with this network.

If your correspondence address is outside these 5 counties, you can still join our network through the Members Area

It is free to join our network. Once you register as a member of a network, you can choose to:

  • receive email updates on all events being run by the South East Region network
  • use our network's discussion forum
  • post comments on articles written by other network members
  • comment on our network blog
  • send messages to other members of our network

Events

All our events allow members to make contacts and network with their peers and industry representatives, and contribute to their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

We organise around five lectures from September to June on topics including:

  • Health and safety legislation
  • Rainwater collection
  • Waste management

Other events where members can meet and network include:

  • Site visits
  • Events to promote engineering
  • Golf outings
  • An annual table quiz and annual dinner dance

Grid25 and what it means for the South and South Eastern region

Date:  8th March 2012
Time:  7.00pm
Venue:  Waterford IT
Admission:  Free.  All welcome

About the Speaker:  John Lowry is the Senior Project Manager for the GridLink project. John has extensive experience in the transmission infrastructure development industry having begun his career with ESB International as design and project manager for a number of major transmission infrastructural projects. Since joining EirGrid in 2004, John has primarily been involved in the connection of major industrial users such as Wyeth (now Pfizer) and generators of both thermal and renewable plant amounting to over 800MW of generation on the Irish Transmission System. During this time John was project manager for Tynagh Energy. As part of the establishment of EirGrid, John was responsible setting the design standards for transmission infrastructure developments and oversaw the design and construction of over 400MW Wind Connection projects on behalf of EirGrid. In addition to working with connecting customers, John was also responsible for Client Engineering at EirGrid and was a primary interface between ESB and EirGrid on all design and construction related activities.

John holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering and an Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Most recent John has completed an Executive MBA at the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.

About the Event:
EirGrid, as Transmission System Operator is tasked with operating, developing and maintaining Irelands Electricity Transmission Infrastructure. To address the future needs of the network and to ensure our capacity to meet Irelands 40% renewable target, EirGrid is implementing a Grid Development Strategy called Grid25.

Grid25 comprises a capital investment in the network of €3.2 billion over the next fifteen years. This investment will provide an efficient and effective network for our future needs and will facilitate further interconnection to Europe providing a platform for Ireland to become a net exporter of energy.

The talk will focus on
·         The role of EirGrid
·         The importance of investing in transmission infrastructure
·         What is Grid25
·         What Grid25 means for the region

Of particular focus will be the commencement of the largest investment project within Grid25 GridLink. The GridLink project is a 400 kV development project linking counties Cork, Wexford and Kildare.

This exciting project is the result of an 18 month long study to identify network needs to facilitate
·         Long term demand growth and economic recovery in the region
·         The connection of 1,630 MW of Gate 3 renewable generation in the south west, south midlands             and south east
·         The potential for future interconnections with either Great Britain or France connecting in the                 south east of the country (e.g. Carrickmines, Arklow and/or Great Island)
·         The efficient use of thermal generation in the south, namely Endesa 430 MW Combined Cycle                 Gas Turbine at Great Island station and the already connected CCGTs at Whitgate and Aghada
·         Cater for Network support requirements
