West region
About
About the region
The West Region has some of the largest infrastructure projects currently underway in Ireland, including:
- New motorways from Galway to Limerick and Athlone
- A new oil terminal
- Galway Harbour Enterprise Park
- The Shell Corrib gas pipeline
- Phase 1 of the Western Rail Corridor from Ennis to Athenry
We represent many sectors of the industry, including third level education, local authorities, central government, contractors, companies, researchers and many more.
The region is a centre of excellence for biomedical engineering, with significant research and development ongoing at private companies, particularly around Galway, and at third-level institutions including:
- National University of Ireland, Galway
- Galway Mayo Institute of Technology
- The Irish Marine Institute in Oranmore, Galway
Our network provides members with a professional and social network for learning and developing potential business opportunities.
As we encompass part of the Gaeltacht region of Galway and Mayo, we particularly welcome participation ‘as Gaeilge’. For the past 20 years, a ‘Leacht as Gaeilge’ has been a cornerstone of our events calendar.
Who can join?
- Engineers and engineering technicians working in the region
- Engineering consultancies and support servicing companies
- Local government and semi-state organisation workers involved in engineering
- Academic researchers, lecturers and students

About the event:
During the past 20 years Ireland has seen the development of major infrastructural projects in rural areas, in areas such as housing, roads, water services, and energy. The interaction of these developments with the rural environment has varied from positive to neutral to negative. In recent years there have been a number of significant changes, legislative and otherwise, which have affected the delivery of infrastructural projects in a rural environment. The recent downturn gives us all the opportunity to pause and consider how future developments can be realised in a sustainable way to support our economic growth, without compromising what makes our rural environment the valuable resource that it is. This course brings together eminent practitioners in this area and seeks to inform and educate attendees in all aspects of planning in the rural environment.
