Course Overview

Engineers are increasingly being asked to come up with more creative solutions while working in more complex environments that require bigger and bigger multi-disciplinary teams to successfully come together. They are also being asked to have an impact on early stage project activities such as opportunity identification and inception/planning. Design Thinking is now recognised as an indispensable methodology that is delivering tangible benefits to organisations in how they deliver their services, products and projects.

Delegates will gain an understanding of Design Thinking and where Design Thinking fits in Engineering Practices and Projects. They will understand how they and their staff could apply DT tools in the course of routine engineering and project work, especially in the areas of bringing multi-disciplinary teams together from different technical and company backgrounds.

Delegates will gain an understanding of how Design Thinking can help Engineers create higher value, better grounded solutions for their customers and clients, both internal and external.

Material to be covered: Design Thinking Principles
Triple Lens - understanding the needs of Technology, Business and Users.
Design Cycle - Desk and Field research, Understanding People, Idea generation, Prototypes.
Stakeholders - Identification, engagement, participation, feedback, enthusiasm.
Planning and Project Approval - Landing Zone - understanding options and choosing the right scope, Map Day - getting all involved off on the right foot.

This programme is intended for Design Leads, Project Managers, Department and Function Heads.
 

Trainer

Keith Finglas is an experienced programme manager and team leader, used to managing and delivering scopes around strategy, routine objectives and crisis situations. Keith worked initially in the Gas Turbine, Brewing and Semi-Conductor Industries but, since leaving Intel, has worked in innovation in many sectors in Ireland, including Food/Drink, Financial Services, Electronic Devices, Services and Education. Keith has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCD.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Confirmation is subject to event fee being finalised. Cancellation fees calculated at 50% of the estimated total bill will be charge for confirmed bookings cancelled less than 5 working days prior to the date of the planned event. A replacement person can attend instead. Cancellations made the day prior to an event will be charged 75% of the total estimated bill. No-shows will be charged the full fee. All cancellations must be confirmed in writing by email. Engineers Ireland will not be liable for any costs in the event of a course being re-scheduled.  This applies, but is not limited, to any travelling, subsistence or consequential expenses incurred by delegates.
