Overview

Leakage of water from the network is a serious problem on a national scale and that is reflected in every county across the country.  Irish Water estimates almost half of the water produced is lost due to leakage within our water mains and within customer properties and is undertaking a national investment programme of works to reduce leakage and improve Ireland’s water supply.  Reducing leakage will continue to be a key priority for Irish Water in the coming years.

Course aim

This level two course on water loss and leakage management will focus on the advanced leakage detection processes and the latest technology available in leakage location. The course will also cover District Meter Areas (DMA) management and how to prioritise which DMA’s to work in based on various KPIS.

  • Leakage planning and prioritisation of DMA’s to work in based on various KPIs

4. Advanced Leakage detection processes

  • Large Diameters mains leakage detection ( correlation, tethered and free flowing devices)
  • Advanced technologies for small diameter leakage detection ( satellite leakage location)
  • Latest technology available in leakage location (correlation, noise loggers, internal tethered devices) and the different unique approaches 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the causes of pipe failure and how pressure can cause breakages within the distribution system
  • Determine leakage detection methods and techniques in response to water loss 
  • Analyse how latest technologies work in large diameter networks
  • Understand the processes that can be used in leakage detection activities
  • Describe how DMA’s are designed and their benefits, and show an appreciation of the techniques required to design, build and maintain them

This course will be of particular interest to engineers, contractors and project managers working with water assets. This advanced programme is aimed at those who already have some experience in water loss control management. 

Trainer Profile

Stuart Hamilton CEnv, CMgr, FCIWEM, FIWA, FCIPHE, MCMI

Stuart has over 35 years of experience in water loss control and water management. Stuart is the managing director of Hydro Tec, a leading water management organisation providing consultancy services to water utilities and private business sectors globally. He is an expert in advanced water management control approaches and specialist techniques in acoustic technology. He works in both small and large diameter networks applying acoustic technological methods in intermittent supply, low pressure and high pressure systems. Stuart has managed large water loss management projects and resources throughout the world in 30 different countries.

Stuart holds membership of several water associations including fellow member of the IWA, CIWEM and CIPHE, past water loss specialist secretary of IWA, committee member of AWWA and past executive committee member of EWRA. He is the principal author of several IWA books including ‘Leak Detection: Technology and Implementation’, ‘Current Leakage Detection Methodologies’ and ‘Water Management and Water Loss’. Stuart is also the co-author of the IWA manual ‘Technology and Equipment for Water Loss Management’.

Confirmation is subject to event fee being finalised. Cancellation fees calculated at 50% of the estimated total bill will be charge for confirmed bookings cancelled less than 5 working days prior to the date of the planned event. A replacement person can attend instead. Cancellations made the day prior to an event will be charged 75% of the total estimated bill. No-shows will be charged the full fee. All cancellations must be confirmed in writing by email. Engineers Ireland will not be liable for any costs in the event of a course being re-scheduled.  This applies, but is not limited, to any travelling, subsistence or consequential expenses incurred by delegates.
