The course is aimed at personnel in all areas, who are interested in any of the following, but have no knowledge of  TIA Portal and wish to be able to solve simple tasks using TIA Portal:

  • Using TIA Portal  to learn about the principles of operation and application of programmable controllers

Course Aim

On completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Recognise where  a PLC may be used in their workplace, and know the benefits of implementing a solution with a Siemens TIA Portal PLC.
  • Knowledge of the  Siemens project structure and introduction  to the different aspects of the TIA Portal Software


  • The wiring of I/O cards and the properties of CPUs.
  • IO addressing
  • PG/PC INTERFACE (how the programming device is connected)
  • MPI/Profibus ports
  • Getting started with the Programming Software ( Simatic Manager)
  • Hardware setup.
  • Code Editor,( LADDER LOGIC)
  • Step 7 instructions and structure of code
  • Inputs, Outputs Memory and Data areas.
  • Different Code Blocks and Code structures
  • Documenting the code, use of symbols and documentation
  • Step7 Timers and counters
  • Comparing values
  • Analogue vs Digital processing. , the differences between them.
  • Using Monitor and Modify to check the installation of a process
  • Overview of Networking options
  • Use of specialised cards , communication processors
  • SCADA interface to PLCs. ( example of same)


  • The ability to use a PC Keyboard and Mouse to open and close programs.
  • Basic knowledge of logic (AND, OR etc).


This hands on course will be delivered by a SITrain (Siemens Training Worldwide) accredited trainer.
