Course Overview

This course encompasses the lifecycle of a road pavement from principles of design and production to the evaluation and maintenance of pavements. It concentrates on the key objectives of a road pavement being fit for its intended purpose and durable for its expected life. The course provides a background to the current pavement design methods generally employed in Ireland and an overview of the new Irish Analytical Pavement Design Method to understand the future of pavement design in Ireland.

Principles and concepts are explained for a broad foundation of pavements design. Each of the pavement constituent materials is considered in detail, emphasising the importance of the material characteristics and properties.

Sustainability and Lifecycle are discussed with reference to cost and economics. Pavement production and the process of laying and compacting the pavement is outlined for a practical understanding. Causes of failure of mature pavements are presented and the various methods for evaluation and assessment of such pavements to inform the improvement of existing roads are described. The procedure for maintenance works and network management are presented.

The operational requirements including specifications for Ireland are discussed and outlined. Traffic analysis and the procedures for calculating and assessing pavement loading is presented. Environmental influences on the pavements performance and durability are discussed. Flexible pavement design using a mechanistic-empirical design approach is presented including an introduction to established systems and software currently available.

The Irish Analytical Pavement Design Method is then presented. A comparison of the new pavement method and the mechanistic-empirical design method is discussed. A demonstration of the new software is presented for an understanding of the new pavement design tool. The course concludes with an outlook of the future of pavement design and management in Ireland.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, the attendee will be able to:

  • Identify the various pavement types and their inherent characteristics.
  • Distinguish between the relevant engineering properties of pavement constituent materials and discuss their determination using laboratory and field testing.
  • Evaluate the effects of the constituent materials and their engineering characteristics on the pavement performance.
  • Assess the effect of environmental conditions on the durability/performance of a pavement over its lifecycle.
  • Specify an intervention for an existing pavement based on pavement monitoring data.
  • Understand the costs and benefits relating to a road pavement during its lifecycle.
  • Prioritise road pavement investment to optimise pavement lifecycle costs and benefits.
  • Distinguish between the various methods of evaluating the performance/ condition of an existing pavement for network and project level assessment.
  • Calculate design traffic/loading type and associated reactions.
  • Identify the failure mechanisms applicable to flexible pavements.
  • Develop a pavement design using the principles of Mechanistic-Empirical pavement design.
  • Critically analyse construction methodologies for flexible pavement materials to identify what construction errors may lead to deficient pavements.
  • Understand the development of the Irish Analytical Pavement Design Method.

Duration of course

This programme will consist of 4 training days across a two week period followed by an assessment day approximately 1 week later. The assessment day will consist of a morning examination and an afternoon workshop for the project outline. Delegates will have 4 weeks to complete their assigned project. Further CPD hours can be recorded for study hours.

Delegates who attend the 4 training days, pass the exam and successfully complete the 4-week assignment will be awarded with DIT certification. 

Accreditation

This programme is accredited by the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) as a Level 9 programme on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and has accredit value of 5 ECTS Credits.

Confirmation is subject to event fee being finalised. Cancellation fees calculated at 50% of the estimated total bill will be charge for confirmed bookings cancelled less than 5 working days prior to the date of the planned event. A replacement person can attend instead. Cancellations made the day prior to an event will be charged 75% of the total estimated bill. No-shows will be charged the full fee. All cancellations must be confirmed in writing by email. Engineers Ireland will not be liable for any costs in the event of a course being re-scheduled.  This applies, but is not limited, to any travelling, subsistence or consequential expenses incurred by delegates.
