Overview

Over the next 10 years there will be significant investment in offshore renewables and in particular offshore wind. It is estimated that the offshore wind capacity in Europe will increase by more than 50 GW between 2020 – 2030 (at an estimated cost of > €100 Billion), including and estimated 2 GW in Ireland. This course will provide an introduction to offshore renewables, focusing on offshore wind. The morning session will focus on geotechnical considerations including site investigations, foundation concepts, foundation design approaches from industry standard to the current state of the art. The afternoon session will focus on structural design and environmental loading considerations.

Course Aim

To provide candidates with an overview of the geotechnical and structural engineering requirements of offshore renewable energy with a focus on offshore wind. The course will include an introduction to design approaches and examples from offshore wind.

Course Objectives

After the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Understand the basic design requirements for offshore renewable energy and benefits / shortcomings of different foundation concepts.
  • Learn about offshore site investigation practice and design standards in the context of the overall offshore foundation design process.
  • Understand foundation design approaches and considerations for the most common foundation concepts.
  • An introduction into the structural dynamics of offshore structures
  • Understand how aerodynamic and hydrodynamic loads are derived and applied to offshore wind turbines

Who should attend?

Consulting engineers with an interest in offshore structures and foundations. A basic knowledge of structural and geotechnical engineering is required. A calculator and pencil are essential, but other required materials will be provided.

Trainer Profiles

Prof. David Igoe CEng PhD BE MIEI

Asst. Professor, Trinity College Dublin

David is assistant professor in Geotechnical Engineering at Trinity College Dublin and former head of offshore engineering at Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (GDG). David has over 14 years experience in Geotechnical Engineering, offshore engineering, foundation analysis, testing and instrumentation projects. He has completed a PhD (2009) in the topic of offshore pile behaviour in sand and has applied his knowledge of this topic to many offshore and onshore geotechnical projects. David has performed research on problems related to pile axial loading, pile lateral loading, pile ageing, cyclic loading, soil-structure dynamics, instrumentation systems, shallow pad footing, gravity base foundations and was heavily involved in the PISA (Pile Stability Analysis) joint industry research project, sponsored by the Carbon Trust Wind Accelerator Program. David worked as head of offshore engineering at Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions managing a large range of projects, primarily related to offshore wind. David has more than 35 international peer reviewed technical publications and is the Irish representative for the European Technical Committee for piling (ETC3). David has expertise in offshore works, pile design, site investigation, test specifications, instrumentation design, monitoring, software development and soil-structure interaction.

Prof. Breiffni Fitzgerald BA BAI PhD CEng MIEI

Asst. Professor, Trinity College Dublin

Breiffni is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) since 2016. During 2015-2016, Breiffni was Assistant Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). He received his Doctorate in Engineering at TCD in 2013 on the topic of dynamics and control of wind turbines. Breiffni’s research interests lie in the areas of structural dynamics and control and health/condition monitoring of civil engineering structures in particular wind turbines. Breiffni has published over 20 international peer-reviewed technical articles. He has co-organized several international conferences and technical-scientific workshops including the 10th International Conference on Damage Assessment of Structures (2013) and the 1st International Workshop on Non-linear Hydrodynamics, Stochastic Dynamics and Control of Offshore Structures (2017). Breiffni has also worked in industry throughout his career. He is a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Engineers of Ireland and was nominated for ‘Chartered Engineer of the Year’ in 2017. In 2016 he became a Director of Allied Consultant Engineering, a consultant engineering practice specialising in innovative structural engineering solutions for the international market.

Confirmation is subject to event fee being finalised. Cancellation fees calculated at 50% of the estimated total bill will be charge for confirmed bookings cancelled less than 5 working days prior to the date of the planned event. A replacement person can attend instead. Cancellations made the day prior to an event will be charged 75% of the total estimated bill. No-shows will be charged the full fee. All cancellations must be confirmed in writing by email. Engineers Ireland will not be liable for any costs in the event of a course being re-scheduled.  This applies, but is not limited, to any travelling, subsistence or consequential expenses incurred by delegates.
