Overview
In association with Engineers Skillnet, Eurocode Seminars have been developed to deliver Continuous Professional Development to qualified engineers in an innovative 'Blended Learning' format utilising video and the latest Web 2.0 technologies.
The seminar begins with an introductory section setting out the history of the Eurocodes. This also discusses the European background to the codes and the aims of the European Commission in proposing and supporting these codes. It also deals with how the Eurocodes relate to product standards for products ranging from off the shelf products to bespoke designs. It links to both the Construction Products Directive and the Public Procurement Directive as well as giving different relationships between the codes.
This is then followed by sessions dealing with EN 1990 “Basis of Structural Design”. These go through the various requirements of this with particular attention drawn to the combination of loads for the ultimate and serviceability limit states.
Following this, there is a review of the ten parts of EN 1991. Seven of these refer to general actions which affect buildings and other structures while the other three deal with more specialist areas such as bridges, silos and tanks, and actions induced by cranes and machinery. These sessions give general information on the codes and the approach being adopted within Ireland in relation to the preparation of National Annexes.
At the end, the implementation of the Eurocodes within Ireland is discussed. This shows how national implementation of the codes is being carried out with the production of
National Annexes including values for Nationally Determined Parameters and how the codes may be used both within Ireland and abroad. A discussion take places on the
studies undertaken into the Eurocodes within Ireland and a summary is given of the current status of the Eurocodes as of the end of April 2009.
