Wastewater treatment facilities optimisation
The training course will provide attendees with knowledge of the fundamentals involved in establishing effective process control of the activated sludge process, and the relatively straight forward techniques to achieve optimization and compliance.
- Venue: Engineers Ireland, 22 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
- Date: 16th September 2010
- Session time: 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. Registration and Tea/Coffee from 8.30am
- Fee: Engineers Ireland members €295, Non members €365
- CPD credit: 1
Course overview
The new treated effluent discharge criteria will require local authorities to be in compliance with a host of parameters including BOD, Suspended Solids, TP, and Ammonia. In Europe the source of these discharge criteria is the Urban Wastewater Directive. The training course will provide attendees with knowledge of the fundamentals involved in establishing effective process control of the activated sludge process, and the relatively straight forward techniques to achieve optimization and compliance. The course will include multiple workshops and opportunities to practice reviewing and interpreting actual operations data from existing treatment plants in both Ireland and Canada.
Course aim
To provide a practical appreciation of the capacity and capability of the existing physical infrastructure in Ireland, and equip attendees with an awareness of how through a combination of effective communication, process control, and management policies, utilities can “un-lock” the latent capability of their facilities.
Learning objectives
- To provide a foundation in the fundamentals of process control to improve performance.
- To provide an appreciation of how to prioritise process control activities at activated sludge systems.
- To provide insights to utility managers and other staff on the type of activities that are typically required to adequately support operations staff in achieving improved performance.
- Help minimise the risk of not achieving the desired performance standards.
Programme
- Attributes and characteristics of water and wastewater professionals
- Sewer use control
- Primary clarifier sludge mass control
- Activated sludge total biomass control
- TP removal
- Nitrification and ammonia removal
- TSS removal
- Review and discuss the daily process control activities at Baltinglass WWTP
- Cause and effect relationships in process control
Who should attend?
Wastewater managers, operations staff, maintenance staff, laboratory staff, staff involved in process engineering.
Trainer's profile
Gerry Wheeler has applied optimisation techniques at water and wastewater treatment facilities in Ireland and internationally over the last 20 years, including a liaison with the U.S. EPAs National Water Optimisation Programme. Gerry is the author of multiple papers and publications on the topic of cost effectively improving the performance of existing facilities to achieve compliance.
