About the event

In a matter of weeks (May 25th) the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force across Europe and globally for businesses that offer services to and process the data of European residents.  This is the most significant legal change in 22 years affecting businesses and how the data of staff and clients are obtained and processed.

Compliance, and being able to evidence compliance, is mandatory for businesses and professionals who handle personal data.  It broadens the definition of personal data and places obligations on all businesses to be compliant and the most important provision of the GDPR is that companies must be able to evidence compliance and not just be compliant.

Planning for and funding compliance, and evidencing that compliance, on an on-going basis is the big challenge facing Engineers and all companies.

This presentation will highlight what GDPR will mean for engineers and how it will impact their business.  It will give a high level view of the steps that need to be considered. This is not exhaustive but will give an indication of the level of commitment and resources required to bring a company to a complaint standard and be able to evidence this when required. The presentation will be followed by a Q & A session

Helen Dixon - Irish Commissioner states that “New data rules mean it cannot be 'business as usual' – The GDPR is big news because it cannot be business as usual for any type of company or public-sector body after May 2018. If it is business as usual after that point, there will be consequences for companies and organisations, whether they are big or small, public or private, and those consequences will be very significant.” (April 2nd 2017)
