About the event

A public lecture hosted by the Thomond region as part of Engineers Week designed to assist first time buyers and those trading up, trading down or building their own home.

Buying a house may well be the biggest investment you will ever make. Saving for a deposit, securing a loan and identifying the property you want to buy are just some of the early challenges. You will need to be sure that the house is in a suitable location, is structurally sound and in a condition that is easy to maintain. You will also need to know that the house will be easy to sell, in the event of new opportunities or change in your life circumstances.  You need to have peace of mind so that you can buy with confidence and enjoy the process as much as possible.

In this presentation, John Garrett will help create an awareness of what is involved in carrying out a pre-purchase inspection and what to expect of the one entrusted to carry out your survey.  The presentation will cover the following topics:

  • site location and suitability
  • the accuracy of the transfer map
  • surface water drainage
  • sewage disposal
  • structure and condition of the property
  • smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detection and alarm systems
  • radon protection
  • planning permission, building regulation compliance and certification processes
  • safety and responsibilities of homeowners who are having construction work carried out on their property
