Alternative routes
Want to join Engineers Ireland but haven’t completed an accredited programme? If your qualifications do not meet the criteria for membership, you can apply through an alternative route.
How it works
We offer a range of alternative routes to membership grades and titles . Your case will be considered individually, and we’ll recommend the correct route to you based on an assessment of your professional experience and relevant qualifications.
If you have sufficient expertise and you successfully complete the interview process, we will offer you an appropriate grade or title.
In exceptional circumstances, we may recommend that you complete some further study or gain further experience before re-applying.

Assessment procedure
After sending in your application, you’ll be guided through a simple assessment procedure to assess your qualifications.
For applicants with related professional experience
We recommend this route if you:
Do not hold formal engineering qualifications at an adequate level
Can demonstrate suitable knowledge and expertise in a branch of engineering over a 5-20 year period
We’ll ask you to produce a portfolio describing your work experience and how it relates to current engineering issues. We’ll then give you an oral examination on your application.
We’ll provide a mentor to guide you as you produce your supporting documentation.
If you succeed, you will be offered an appropriate professional title - either chartered engineer, associate engineer or engineering technician.
In exceptional circumstances, other processes will apply.
