Why apply for a professional title?
Professional Titles are recognised by employers both in Ireland and abroad, by other engineering professional bodies and the general public. Professional titles facilitate international mobility and are recognised through various international agreements.How to apply
- Check you have the required educational standard, appropriate qualifications and experience for your title
- Fill out the relevant application form for your title:

- Prepare four bound copies of your supporting documentation, including one original
- Include the professional interview fee
- Include your subscription fee if you are not already an Engineers Ireland member, or ensure your subscription is up to date
- There are two deadlines in each calender year, being the last Friday of January and June respectively.
Get support
- Applications for the title of Fellow require 4 supporters, including a minimum of 3 Fellows, with the 4th supporter to be either a Fellow or a Chartered Engineer
- Applications for the title of Chartered Engineer require support from 2 Chartered Engineers
- Applications for the title of Associate Engineer or Engineering Technician require support from either 2 Chartered Engineers, or 1 Chartered Engineer and 1 Associate Engineer
Processing your application
- To qualify for a professional title you must demonstrate that you have the core competencies outlined in our regulations and are thereby eligible to hold the title
The professional review process involves:
- Your Engineering Practice Report
- Submission and assessment of your Engineering Practice Report
- Professional Interview
Your Engineering Practice Report
- Your report details your professional development (candidates for Chartered Engineer must submit two essays as part of their report)
- Your report will be assessed by Chartered Engineers who will be looking for evidence that you have demonstrated sufficient experience and competence in order to proceed to Professional Interview.
- The closing dates for receipt of Engineering Practice Reports is the last Friday of January and the last Friday of June each year
Your Professional interview
Interviews are held in our Dublin office and in regional venues around the country. The interview is confidential, and is conducted by a panel of three Chartered Engineers who are members of Engineers Ireland.
Interviews last:
- 1 hour for the title of Chartered Engineer
- 45 minutes for the title of Associate Engineer or Engineering Technician
You will be given 10 minutes at the start of the interview to provide a summary of your report. The interviewers will be looking for evidence that you have the competences required, as outlined in the regulations for the registered title
The membership board approves the outcome of the professional interviews. Visit the membership board meeting schedule and application deadlines.
If you are unsuccessful at interview, the reasons will be detailed in an interview report, and advice will be offered on actions to take before re-applying.
