Professional recognition

Our membership grades and professional titles confirm the professional standards attained by our members, advancing their careers in Ireland and abroad.

Membership grades

Engineers Ireland represents all engineering disciplines, and we take pride in the fact that each applicant is considered on an individual basis. There is an application route for every member of the engineering profession, and we will take both your qualification and work experience into consideration when assessing what is the best one you.

The membership grades are:

  • Ordinary Member (MIEI)
  • Technician (Tech IEI)
  • Other (Affiliate, Companion, Student)

In the majority of cases, membership grades are granted for an engineering qualification from an accredited course.

Qualifications received abroad may also be recognised under our international agreements.

For those who do not hold accredited engineering qualifications, there are alternative routes to membership.

Professional titles

A professional title from Engineers Ireland provides a formal recognition of professional competence. Titles are awarded based on educational qualifications and competencies gained from experience in the workplace.

When you earn your professional title, your employers, other professional bodies and the public will recognise your engineering expertise – whether you’re in Ireland or overseas.

Through our agreements with international bodies and specialist groups, your professional title will also be recognised abroad, giving you greater opportunities to travel and advance your career outside Ireland.

Through these agreements, you’ll enjoy an ever-growing access to technical expertise and support in the international engineering community.
