Professional titles

A professional title from Engineers Ireland provides a formal recognition of professional competence. Titles are awarded based on educational qualifications and competencies gained from experience in the workplace.

Chartered engineer (CEng MIEI)

This is the legal title used by professional engineers demonstrating a high level of professional expertise. Certain engineering work is reserved for chartered engineers, particularly within civil engineering and it is also internationally recognised.

If you are currently registered as a Chartered or Professional Engineer with another engineering body, you may be eligible for registration as a Chartered Engineer title with mutual recognition.

To become a Chartered Engineer, you will need:

Associate engineer (AEng MIEI)

An Associate engineer is allowed to exercise independent technical judgement and work with significant autonomy in their professional capacity.

To become an Associate engineer, you will need:

  • An accredited level 7qualification or equivalent

    And

  • Four years post-graduate training and experience to standards prescribed by Engineers Ireland (three years for candidates who hold an accredited BTech or BSc degree)

You will need to submit an engineering practice report and attend for interview to demonstrate that you have the required competences for the title.

Engineering technician (Eng Tech IEI)

An Engineering Technician is qualified to use established engineering techniques and works under guidance to solve practical engineering problem.

To become an engineering technician, you will need:

Fellow (CEng FIEI)

This is a grade conferred by Council on chartered engineers who have achieved distinction in the profession. To become a fellow, you must:

  • Be a Chartered Engineer
  • Hold or have held senior positions with major responsibilities over a minimum of five years
