Adapting the FlexiArch bridge system for widening a bridge in Bristol

This is the second in a two-part series on the FlexiArch system. It is recommended that part one of this series, entitled ‘The FlexiArch bridge system: from concept to application’, is read prior to the article below (1). The Teewell Hill arch bridge, owned by South Gloucestershire Council in the UK, had been constructed in the 1840s over the Bristol to Bath railway line (now a popular cycle route) in what is now a busy residential area. The bridge had become an accident blackspot due ...

IT Sligo student research into strategic links to improve the current skill shortage

The recession in the UK has had a profound impact on the engineering and construction industries – not only financially, but also socio-economically. A brain drain, which has come about due to the misconception that the construction industry is still suffering, has created a crisis due to a skills shortage. The industry will now have to rebuild itself, especially in terms of narrowing the skills gap of those entering into higher-level education and considering a career in engineering and ...

The FlexiArch bridge system - from concept to application

The strength, stiffness, durability and minimal maintenance attributes of arch bridges are acknowledged by structural engineers throughout the world. In addition, their aesthetic qualities are universally acclaimed, so much so that there are hundreds of thousands of arch bridges in the world (some over 2000 years old). Thus, in the early 1990s, Gordon Millington (formerly president of Engineers Ireland) asked the first author the question, ‘Why is it that so few arch bridges have been ...

TCD engineer takes Zero-G ‘vomit comet’ to study steam-powered spacecraft

Dr Tony Robinson’s work for the European Space Agency (ESA) involves exploring how deep space travel might one day become possible. Recently, however, his research took him across the Atlantic to explore zero gravity for himself at 32,000 feet. Robinson is a researcher in Trinity College Dublin’s CONNECT centre – the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Future Networks – and an assistant professor in mechanical and manufacturing engineering in the university. He was taking a ...
