Content Editor & Web Executive – Fixed Term of Two Years

Engineers Ireland is the professional body for engineers and engineering in Ireland. With over 23,000 members across the island of Ireland and overseas, we focus on the promotion and development of all disciplines of engineering, working collaboratively with industry, educational institutions, state bodies and the public service. As one of the country’s largest and longest-established professional bodies, we liaise closely with the engineering community to act as the voice of the profession and to promote excellence through a programme of ongoing accredited professional development and certification. As part of our STEPS programme, we run a variety of nationwide initiatives to encourage students to consider engineering as a career and to broaden their understanding of the profession and the potential employment opportunities available to them.  
The Content Editor and Web Executive is a full time role within the Marketing and Communications team. This team is responsible for leading the development and implementation of Engineers Ireland’s corporate communications, strategic marketing and stakeholder-engagement policies and activities with the aim of further enhancing and strengthening the Engineers Ireland brand. The team has a key role in both raising the profile of the organisation and growing the membership across a diverse range of engineering disciplines, in close collaboration with the Membership team.  In addition to the management of all content and design aspects of the organisation’s website,, other team member activities include writing and issuing of the fortnightly digital journal, the Engineers Journal; press relations; corporate events; social media; marketing, commercial sponsorship and partnerships, including our Corporate Partner programme; key publications and public affairs.

The Role

  • This is a two-year fixed term contract based at the organisation’s head office in Dublin 4.   
  • We are looking for a resourceful, motivated, forward-thinking and enthusiastic Content Editor and Web Executive.   The successful candidate is expected to have excellent writing skills, a passion for digital design, be creative and have excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • They will be the Content Editor of the organisation’s website – - this website is integral to our digital presence and our engagement with our stakeholders, namely our member engineers.  
  • As Content Editor, the Executive will work with the Marketing and Communications directorate to create an overall positive user experience on our website. They will produce material for publication, so they must possess excellent writing and editing skills, as well as understand the special considerations for writing for the web. 
  • This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with all staff across the organisation. They must also be highly organised and detail oriented and may also supervise contributors who provide content. 
  • Whilst not responsible for the full technical aspects of the website, (which are managed by a third party), the perfect candidate will also have working knowledge of website frontend technologies to find their way around existing solutions, upload daily content with ease, offer simple fixes and implement designs.  
  • Another very important part of this role is the responsibility for the issue of the organisation’s key group emails to meet the business needs of our organisation.
  • These initiatives ( and our group email communication to our members) all aim to support a core goal of the organisation in our Strategic Plan (20172020), which is to ‘build the profile and enhance the status and reputation of the engineering profession and to continue to enhance Engineers Ireland as its leading voice.’  We need to ensure that we are leveraging the potential of these initiatives to optimise public awareness of our work and to assist in achieving this goal. 
  • It should be noted by all applicants, that as part the centre-piece of our digital marketing effort, our website ( will be re-designed in early 2018 which will result in a more responsive, dynamic and contextual design.  Our website will have a more community focus (as outlined in our organisational values1) and be a key motivator in encouraging our members’ propensity to support our work and each other. 
  • Market research is underway to help support that redevelopment.  The first milestone of the market research is due in late September.
  • As the new Content Editor and Web Executive, this is a wonderful opportunity to influence and bring your expertise to assist in delivering a significantly enhanced digital presence for Engineers Ireland. 
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Manage and upload in a timely and effective way, the day-to-day content updates on
2. Manage the issuing of the organisation’s key group email communications – weekly and monthly (including but not limited to, the organisation’s monthly email corporate newsletter; fortnightly Engineers Journal email; events brief, weekly jobs desk email; AGM notice etc).
3. Proactively work on securing, writing and uploading relevant content for the organisation’s current website.
4. Liaise with third parties when required, namely, current website host companies and chosen website redevelopment firm.
5. Work with the Marketing and Communications Director and the Marketing Officer to guide and assist in the migration of content from the old to the new digital platform.

6. With our new digital presence in 2018, create, develop, curate and maintain the website’s catalogue of content including overseeing and evaluating the editorial content of all narrative. 
7. Strategically manage development improvements to the new website; keep abreast and advise of developments in the digital arena; identify new digital opportunities. 
8. Research and write and/ or record and upload SEO-friendly content pieces such as blog posts, long-form content pieces, case studies, and other content for our website. Ensure the content is consistent with the company's brand voice, style and tone. 
9. Proactively liaise with staff and others (including members) to encourage them to write relevant and interesting content for the website; foster relationships with the latter to involve them in any community aspect of the new website. 
10. Work with the Marketing Officer in the execution of national marketing campaigns, including campaign tracking, monitoring, and management. 
11. Administer on a daily basis the web-editor info mailbox. 
12. Ensure that all activity is measured, analysed and reviewed with learnings taken forward.  Accountable for disseminating monthly analytical reports. Regularly report on digital campaigns and contribute, where possible, with recommendations based on performance. 
13. Participation in special projects and other related duties as requested. Assist the Marketing Director in her senior user role on the Website Redevelopment Project Board. 


  • A minimum of two to three years relevant experience in a Marketing/Digital team position.
  • A qualification in Digital Communications/ Media, or Marketing or PR or Journalism or IT/Web. 


  • Past experience of producing written content end-to-end for web.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing a digital platform.
  • Must have website development and maintenance experience.
  • Working knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and ideally some PHP, MySQL.
  • Excellent Photoshop skills.
  • Some evidence showing web/digital media design desirable.
  • Have superb user experience skills and be able to develop wire-framing and write and communicate clear, functional/design specifications.
  • Understanding of website analytics e.g. Google Analytics.
  • Good knowledge of at least two CMS (one of which should be WordPress) and SEO best practice.
  • Managing and reporting on email campaigns (Mailchimp experience a plus).

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent writing skills; must have digital copy and copy-editing experience.
  • Design/Desk top publishing experience (Adobe).
  • Digital marketing experience.
  • Be proficient at planning your own work and delivering to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and be held accountable with minimal supervision.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Basic video making and editing skills useful - but not essential.
  • Commitment to quality, accuracy, detail and consistency.
  • Have a passion for design, user experience, marketing and information architecture.
  • Strong communicator with excellent collaborative skills.
  • The ability to multitask and work at a high volume.
  • The ability to work well within a team environment.
  • Outgoing, proactive and professional.
  • Curiosity around accurate content generation in relation to the engineering industry.
