Less than 5% of engineers are currently unemployed despite the tough economic times, it was revealed at the start of Engineers Week 2013.

The finding, in a survey by HRM Recruit in association with Engineers Ireland of 2,064 engineers in January and February 2013, shows that engineers possess diverse skills that are always appealing to employers even in difficult economic times such as now, according to John Power, Director General of Engineers Ireland.  “The highly mobile skills that come with being a qualified engineer means professionals in the area are rarely out of work for long, even in the most difficult of times.  The diverse opportunities that a career in engineering provides is a continuous theme of the HRM report, “Engineering Perspectives”, the full details of which we will be launching this Wednesday of Engineers Week 2013.  The robust nature of an engineering qualification is a key message we will be continually highlighting throughout this year’s week-long programme of nationwide events.  The week will once again celebrate the world of engineering in Ireland and the key role it will play in our economy’s recovery.”

Engineers Week 2013 begins on Monday with the launch by Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte TD of ‘The State of Ireland 2013 – a review of infrastructure in Ireland’ report.  Tuesday, February 26 is marked by a ‘3rd Level Focus’ featuring the Engineers Week Challenge, ‘Sustainable Ireland and the Cloud’, developed in conjunction with Mainstream Renewable Power.

There will be an ‘Engineering Career breakfast’ to launch the HRM Recruit report on the sector with Minister John Perry on Wednesday, February 27 while Thursday, February 28 will explore the world of mathematics with the ‘Dr Maths’ workshops, supported by Minister Ruairi Quinn.

Friday, March 1 sees engineering employers across Ireland run organised tours of their facilities as part of ‘Open Day’ while Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3 will feature family-oriented engineering shows in many regions to conclude the week.  To find out more information about the events taking place near you, or to register your attendance, visit www.engineersweek.ie.
