Presidential Address on ‘Ireland’s Energy Challenge’ Thursday 29 September

Dermot Byrne BE MBA MEngSc CEng FIEI, who was inaugurated as President of Engineers Ireland for 2016/17 in May, will give his Presidential Address on Thursday 29 September 2016 at 22 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

Entitled ‘Ireland’s Energy Challenge – A Personal Perspective’, all are welcome and members in particular are encouraged to attend this keynote event in our calendar. 

Please arrive from 6:00pm with the Address commencing at 6:30pm.

A graduate of University College Dublin, Dermot Byrne holds Masters Degrees in both Electrical Engineering and in Business Administration. He has extensive senior management experience in the electricity industry in Ireland and abroad.  From 1993 to 2000, he worked in senior roles with ESB National Grid, ESB Customer Services and Power Generation.

In 2000, Dermot Byrne was appointed as the first Head of ESB Networks and he was Chief Executive of EirGrid from July 2005 until his retirement in 2012.

Following his retirement from EirGrid, Dermot has taken up non-executive Directorships at 'Element Power Ireland', a leading renewable energy company, and at 'Intellectual Ventures - Invention Investment Ireland', a global intellectual property investment fund. 

On behalf of the Department of Communications, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Dermot chairs an expert group developing an Energy Research Strategy and Implementation Plan for Ireland.

Dermot Byrne is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland, a Distinguished Member of the international electricity body CIGRE and has been awarded Chartered Director status by the Institute of Directors in London.  Read his full biography
