Cork in the Engineers Journal

Why I became an engineer: Three people tell their story

Two project engineers and an associate at RPS Group tell the Engineers Journal why creativity, curiosity and wanting to make the world a better place are at the heart of wanting to work in the profession. They tell their stories below: Louise Campion, project engineer, RPS [caption id="attachment_41055" align="alignright" width="259"] Louise Campion[/caption] I graduated with a BSc (hons) and ME in structural engineering with architecture from UCD, in 2010 and 2012 respectively, ...

Climate change: exploring a citizen-centric paradigm

Political discourse acknowledges that climate change is real and the government has tasked the citizens’ assembly with devising strategies for making Ireland a leader in tackling climate change. As consumers, our choices and behaviours can influence energy demand and carbon emissions. This article explores attitudes, opinions and behaviours relating to climate change, renewable energy and citizen engagement in Ireland. The following discussion is informed by quantitative survey data from ...

Coastal erosion in Ireland – engineering solutions for future management

In part one of this article, Dr Jimmy Murphy outlined Ireland’s history of engagement with the coast in relation to erosion and examined the efficacy of previous attempts to address the problem. The approach adopted by the Office of Public Works (OPW) is practical and, in general, is in line with local authority opinions – the councils say that they are aware of the locations at most risk to coastal erosion and those specific locations have been prioritised for coastal protection ...

Coastal erosion in Ireland: a perspective on past and present management

This article outlines Ireland’s history of engagement with the coast in relation to erosion and proposes a methodology for moving forward such that we are ready to address the various challenges that were described in a previous article. In contrast to most other European countries who are very proactive in terms of their approach to coastal erosion and management, Ireland’s response is very much reactive. Given that large sections of the coastline are unpopulated, it is sensible to limit ...

UCC engineering students build shelters for refugees and displaced people

Walls made of cardboard, roofs unrolled like cling film and interlocking pods that can expand or contract depending on how many people they need to accommodate. These are some of the ideas put in to practice by civil engineering students at University College Cork (UCC), who have designed and built shelters for refugees and displaced persons. Working under the mentorship of Akiboye Connolly Architects, the students designed their shelters following briefings from UNHCR (the United Nations ...
