George Boole: grandfather of the digital age

Author: Eoin Gill is a chartered engineer and a lecturer at Waterford Institute of Technology where he is also co-director of Calmast STEM outreach group On November 2, 1815, when a son was born to a Lincoln cobbler John Boole and his wife, Mary, it would hardly have been expected that this child would create mathematics that would run the world. Although from a relatively humble background, George Boole, despite never having attended college, became the first professor of mathematics on ...

Wind energy: the good, the bad and the policy

Author: Dr Paul Deane, Environmental Research Institute, University College Cork Wind energy is a hot topic when it comes to discussions on Ireland’s current and future energy mix. While arguments about wind energy in the media are often distilled down to simple soundbites (where it is either the best decision or the worst decision for the country), the actual arguments for or against are a lot more nuanced and complicated... this is wind energy, the good, the bad and the ...

Coastal erosion: the main challenges battering Ireland

Dr Jimmy Murphy, senior researcher at Beaufort, UCC Ireland’s long and varied coastline ranges from high rocky cliffs that can resist Atlantic waves to sandy beaches that seem to change with every tide. Many of our most beautiful landscapes are by the coast and it is largely unspoiled and rich in biodiversity. A large proportion of our population live there and it is the interface through which most goods enter and leave the country. Global coastlines are coming under increased ...

A bioenergy model for Ireland: greening the gas grid

Author: Prof Jerry D Murphy, Science Foundation Ireland, Marine Renewable Energy Ireland Centre, Environmental Research Institute, School of Engineering, University College Cork An ongoing task for engineers is to predict the future and plan infrastructure based on these predictions. This is a difficult task and is not an exact science. Questions abound. What will the population of the country be in 2050? How much housing is needed and where is it required? Where will industry be ...
