Concern has been implementing long-term programmes in Liberia since 1991 and Sierra Leone since 1995. Its ongoing work addressing education, food security and health education issues, have been redesigned to focus on the Ebola crisis. Concern will continue to tackle the Ebola crisis across both countries at all key stages of virus transmission, through social mobilisation and behaviour change, surveillance, infection prevention and control, isolation and care, and safe burial of corpses. The organisation is already reaching 170,000 people affected by Ebola across both countries:

  • In Liberia, Concern is preparing for the construction and management of ten community-care centres including water and sanitation (WASH) infrastructure such as hazardous waste management;
  • In Sierra Leone, Concern has taken on responsibility for safe and dignified burials including the management of two cemeteries, ten burial teams and a fleet of 22 vehicles to transfer victims to the cemeteries for the entire Western Area (Freetown). All graves are marked, so they can be easily found by family members.
