A group of engineers, from NUI Galway and the Engineers Ireland West Region, recently raised €1,500 for local mental health awareness charity Jigsaw Galway. The team hosted a table quiz in Seven Bar. It is fast becoming a regular annual event in the region, there were well in excess of 100 people there - and they were primarily engineers or engineering students. While the majority of the donation was raised on the night, a large portion was kindly sponsored by Engineers Ireland West Region and OCC Construction. The event is growing year on year and the team would like to thank everybody who supported it in 2018. They said they intend continuing with the fundraiser over the coming years. Dr Jamie Goggins, Engineers Ireland West Region and a senior lecturer in NUI Galway, said: “It’s great to see enthusiastic engineering students such as John and Conor take initiatives like this to give back to the community. "They are, after all, learning in college how to turn science and technology into things that are tangible and useful to society. This knowledge, together with the work ethic and ethos of these students, will in doubt lead to many positive contributions to society over many years to come during their careers.” Justin McDermott, fundraising manager, Jigsaw, said: "We are so delighted to have been selected to benefit from this fantastic fundraiser.  The funds and support we have received is vital - they enable us to continue to provide our free, confidential and non-judgmental service supporting the mental health and wellbeing of young people (aged 15-25) in Galway city and county."
