Plans for a new cycle route along the river Liffey will be made available for public consultation in the coming weeks. The proposed cycle route will link the west and east of the city, travelling along the river Liffey from Heuston Station to the Point Village. The area is home to five of Ireland’s top ten visitor sites, attracting over five million visitors in 2013 alone. In total, thirteen routes were considered. Each of the options was developed to a conceptual design stage and an appraisal of each was undertaken using the following criteria; quality of service for cyclists, network efficiency, environmental quality, costs, technical risk and operation and maintenance issues. Four options will be presented to the Dublin City Elected Council in March, followed by a non-statutory public consultation. A final preferred route will be selected from this process and the proposal will be subject to further public consultation and council approval. Three of the four options entail a two way cycle track along the side of the road closest to the river on the north quay. The fourth is made up of one way cycle tracks on both quays, on the side of the road closest to the buildings. A period of non-statutory public consultation will be used to gather the public’s opinions of the four options under consideration. Plans and drawings, of the four proposed routes, will be put on display for one month, available to view on www.cycledublin.ie. Information gathered during the consultation processes will be used in the selection of the preferred option.
