President Dermot Byrne shares his personal perspective on Ireland's energy challenge in his Presidential Address.

All members and others are welcome and encouraged to attend this keynote event in our calendar.  Please arrive from 6:00 PM with the Address commencing at 6:30 PM.  

The Address will be followed by light snacks and refreshments in Café Clyde.

About the speaker

Dermot Byrne Chartered Engineer - President 2016-2017
A graduate of UCD, Dermot holds a Masters in Electrical Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration. He has extensive senior management experience in the electricity industry in Ireland and abroad. From 1993 to 2000 he worked in senior roles with ESB National Grid, ESB Customer Services and Power Generation.

In 2000 he was appointed as the first Head of ESB Networks where he oversaw the ramp-up of investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure in Ireland, with particular focus on the network renewal programme. Dermot was appointed Chief Executive of EirGrid – the transmission system operator for Ireland – in July 2005.

In his role as Chief Executive and Managing Director, Dermot developed EirGrid into a group structure with responsibilities in Ireland and Northern Ireland, comprising EirGrid TSO, System Operator Northern Ireland (SONI Ltd.), and the Single Electricity Market Operator (SEMO).

Following his retirement from EirGrid in 2012, Dermot has taken up non-executive Directorships at 'Element Power Ireland', a leading Renewable Energy Company, and at 'Intellectual Ventures - Invention Investment Ireland', a global intellectual property investment fund. Dermot chairs the Board of Vita, a not-for-profit NGO working to improve the livelihoods of households and communities in East Africa, principally in rural Ethiopia and Eritrea.

On behalf of the Department of Communications, Climate Change and Natural Resources Dermot chairs an expert group developing an Energy Research Strategy and Implementation Plan for Ireland.

Dermot is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland, a Distinguished Member of the international electricity body CIGRE and was recently awarded Chartered Director status by the Institute of Directors in London.
