Complexity Theory: How it can help us think about risk in construction

The purpose of this article, writes Sean Brady, is to explore how complex systems thinking can be applied to a construction project, specifically from the perspective of understanding why engineering failures can occur. But complex systems thinking can be applied to most forms of project failure, be they technical, delay or financial.

How 3D printing is transforming design and creating forms that blow today’s buildings out of the water

Since the industrial revolution, construction materials have been largely confined to a range of mass-produced elements. From steel beams to plywood panels, this standardised kit of parts has informed the design and construction of buildings for more than 150 years. That may soon change with advances in large-scale additive manufacturing. Not since the adoption of the steel frame has there been a development with as much potential to transform the way buildings are conceived and constructed, writes James Rose.
