To give engineers, medical, OHS and related personnel:
  • an appreciation of the complexity of slip events
  • a fundamental understanding of  the application of tribology to such perturbations to upright pedestrian locomotion 
  • guidance to the changing state of the art in testing and auditing of surfaces

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course the attendees should have a better understanding of:
  • the scope of tribology in the footwear/flooring interface
  • the relevance of wear and lubrication as well as friction for the antecedents of a slip event
  • the scope and limitations of consensus-based standards and the broad application of engineering and ergonomic principles to a range of test equipment and their use in a built environment 
  • the breath of multi-disciplinary literature sources upon which ethical expert reports are developed for slip event analysis


  • Fundamentals of tribology and the associated engineering design process
  • Elastomeric properties of materials and floor surfaces, together with an overview of dynamic interactions such as elastohydrodynamic lubrication, draping, asperities, and of surface or material defects
  • Elements of elastomeric wear and the topographic nature of surface environments and the interactions with impulsive pedestrian ambulation
  • Relevant British and other Standards and some of their limitations
  • An appreciation of field of forensic tribology in order to clarify aspects of an instantaneous slip event 
  • Scientific errors, ethics and related sample legal cases, plus other miscellaneous vectors of relevance to assist those in the insurance/legal or in the OHS/medical arena

Trainer's profile

Patrick Donohue sits on the Australian Standard Committee BD094 ‘Slip Resistance of Pedestrian Surfaces’.  He has authored over 1000 consulting engineering reports, including rail, remote-control underground coal mining, wharf, and numerous slip and fall, manual handling and workplace system defects.   As a cognitive ergonomist he audits road designs for their causation of dynamic mode and situation awareness hazards.  His passion is fine art, especially Renaissance Religious Art, and from his work as a tribologist, a concept designer and an artist in his own right (Sir John Sulman Finalist NSW 2008), he is uniquely qualified to forensically search for old master paintings.  ‘JTurner RA’ version of JF Overbeck’s ‘Triumph of Religion in the Arts’ is just such a discovery of distinction.

Confirmation is subject to event fee being finalised. Cancellation fees calculated at 50% of the estimated total bill will be charge for confirmed bookings cancelled less than 5 working days prior to the date of the planned event. A replacement person can attend instead. Cancellations made the day prior to an event will be charged 75% of the total estimated bill. No-shows will be charged the full fee. All cancellations must be confirmed in writing by email. Engineers Ireland will not be liable for any costs in the event of a course being re-scheduled.  This applies, but is not limited, to any travelling, subsistence or consequential expenses incurred by delegates.
