About the event

Economic recovery has led to a return to annual compounding growth in Port volumes, in particular, unitized cargo. The Dublin Port Masterplan 2040, reviewed 2018, expects throughput to grow from 38 million gross tonnes in 2018 to 77 million tonnes by 2040.

This presentation sets out the challenge of expansion within the sensitive marine environment of Dublin Bay focussing on the Alexandra Basin Redevelopment (ABR) Project, the first Strategic Infrastructure Development brought forward to planning from the Masterplan and now currently at construction stage.

It describes the main drivers for growth at Dublin Port and poses the question; Will the expansion of Dublin Port have a significant impact on the marine environment of Dublin Bay?

To answer this question, the presentation sets out the environmental constraints and how Dublin Port Company has addressed this challenge through establishing a Masterplan and bringing forward to planning, projects which adhere to the principles of proper and sustainable development. The presentation focusses on the Alexandra Basin Redevelopment (ABR) Project, the first Strategic Infrastructure Development to be successfully brought through the planning process and which is now at the construction stage.

Details of the extensive monitoring programme being undertaken during the construction of the ABR Project, including capital dredging within Dublin Bay, is presented and discusses how this new scientific data is helping in our understanding of the sensitivity of the marine environment of Dublin Bay.
