Space Engineering in Ireland
About the event
Space engineering is a challenging field, requiring engineers to design and manufacture high value, low volume products which will survive and operate in unforgiving environments, both during launch and in space.
Irish industry and academia are at the forefront of research and development in space engineering.
This event will provide an insight into the unique challenges experienced when designing and manufacturing systems and components for space service, including considerations around reliability during the asset’s operational life, the impact of temperature variations and cosmic radiation and finally disposal at end of life, often by burning up in the atmosphere so that no orbital debris is generated.
About the speakers
Jim White Chartered Engineer - Engineering Manager at Nammo Ireland
Jim is responsible for space engineering activities across a range of applications, including flow control and support structures for launcher engines. He has extensive experience in development, design and testing of products in both the space and oil and gas industries.
Dr David McKeown - Assistant Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at University College Dublin
David's current research is on vibration control of launch vehicles as part of the European Space Agency’s Future Launcher Preparatory Programme. He acts as the academic advisor for the Attitude, Determination and Control Systems (ADCS) subsystem and the Wave Based Control (WBC) payload of EIRSAT-1, Ireland’s first satellite.
Representative from Enterprise Ireland, where Conor Sheehan is the Irish Delegate to the European Space Agency, and the National Contact Person for space funding under Horizon 2020.
