About the event

Ulster University working in cooperation with Colorado State University have been exploring the impact of flooding on the stability of masonry arch bridges. These historic structures are typically constructed on shallow foundations and in many cases, the nature, size and form of the bridge substructure are unknown. The situation is complicated by the fact that in many cases the structural record drawings have been lost.  The salient finding from the current study is that the stability and performance of these bridges are readily threatened by major storm occurrences. The recent flooding in Cumbria (2009 & 2015) and in Northern Ireland (2018) has demonstrated that large return period storms are injurious to the general public and pose major challenges to stakeholder organizations charged with “future proofing” the national infrastructure.

Given this background, Ulster University is holding a one-day workshop on the vulnerability and management of masonry arch bridges.  The event is designed to draw upon the experience and expertise of a wide range of designers, contractors, statutory bodies and asset managers from the public and private sectors.  It is hoped that the exchange of perspectives will suggest good practice guidance for improving the resilience of these important historic bridges.
