Career Consultancy Service


Engineers Ireland has developed an engineer focused and competitive one-to-one career consultancy service for engineering professionals in conjunction with a number of experienced consultants located nationally. Our core goal is to assist engineers, at all levels, to develop their careers and the service is aimed at those who are:

  • Seeking employment
  • Planning to make a career change
  • Seeking to improve their job satisfaction
  • Looking to further develop particular competencies & skills

Each career consultancy session can be tailored to meet the needs of the individual. Accordingly, once the individual's requirements are defined, the format, content and objectives of each session are set by the Career Consultant and the Individual. 

A typical career consultancy session is a mix of career coaching and practical advice and can consist of the following:

Career Coaching

  • Career analysis
  • Exploration of the individual's competencies, motivations and values
  • Development of career options
  • Career strategy and planning
  • Formulation of personal development plans

Practical Advice

  • Writing CVs and cover letters
  • Interview skills
  • Communication skills - both verbal and written
  • Making job applications and completing assessments

We have agreed the following fees with the consultants:

(Up to 4 hours consultation - approx. 3 hours face-to-face)

  • Career Coaching and Practical Advice

* Any follow up consultancy sessions (up to 2 hours) will cost an additional €100 per session for members and €150 for non-members.
* If you have a unique requirement such as mock interviews, then this should be discussed with the consultant as it may result in additional costs.

The service is available in the following locations:

  • Engineers Ireland, 22 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
  • Engineers Ireland in partnership with Rebalance, Co. Cork.
  • Engineers Ireland in partnership with Devane Careers, Swangate, Athenry, Co. Galway.
  • Engineers Ireland in partnership with Coach your Goal, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. 
  • Engineers Ireland in partnership with Aidan Kelly, University of Limerick and Ballyhurley, Ogonnelloe, Co. Clare.

We are currently looking to expand our service to other locations and we will notify the membership appropriately.

Our Dublin based Consultant:

John ButlerDr. John Butler, BE, MIE, CEng FIEI

John holds a Doctorate in Business Studies from DCU along with Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Industrial Engineering degrees from UCD. He is an experienced engineer, manager and director in a wide range of technical and management positions.

John has worked extensively in the multinational and public sectors in a broad range of industries and in a wide range of functions including human resource management, development and operations. He has extensive experience working with engineers of all levels in supporting their career development.

Our Cork based Consultant:

Edel RigasEdel Rigas is a Coaching Psychologist focusing on career and performance management across both the private and public sectors.

Working with graduate and seasoned professionals alike, Edel supports the successful management of careers in a business environment which is throwing up many new challenges for individuals and organisations alike.
New challenges require new tactics and career changes now require a more sophisticated ‘marketing’ approach than ever before.  For engineers this means the full package of technical capabilities and ‘soft’ skills - in equal measure.

Marie brings a wealth of experience in hiring, developing and coaching engineers from her former Human Resources and Talent Acquisition roles at a World leading Medical Device multinational in the West. 

This experience coupled with her Masters in H.R. Leadership, Career Coaching qualifications and her competence in psychometrics from the British Psychological Society makes her an ideal Career Coach for our members.

Additionally, Marie’s passion for people and their progress, and her ability to prepare her clients for a challenging and competitive work environment will be very beneficial to Engineers Ireland as we continue to provide professional Career Services to our members.

Our Midlands based consultant:

Padraig O’Connor B.Eng MIEI, MACPadraig O’Connor B.Eng MIEI, MAC

Padraig holds a B.Eng in Electronic Engineering from DCU, a Diploma in Executive, Business and Personal Coaching along with multiple professional qualifications related to management and training delivery. He is a highly experienced engineer, manager, coach and trainer having worked in a number of senior management and technical roles across the Software Telecoms and Training sectors.

He holds full membership with the Association for Coaching (AC) and is registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) for the administration of personality and aptitude tests.

Padraig has extensive experience working with a wide range of clients that include engineers, IT professionals, and the unemployed in supporting them with career development.

Our Clare/South West based consultant:

Aidan KellyAidan Kelly - Dip Career Coaching, Dip HRM, BA (Politics/Economics)

Aidan has been coaching and mentoring people at all levels for the past 15 years through his work in recruitment and human resources. Degree qualified with post graduate diplomas in both Human Resource Management (University of Limerick) and Career Coaching (Dublin Institute of Technology), he has significant practical knowledge of the engineering job market from both the employer and candidate’s perspectives.  Skilled at assessing people’s requirements and assisting them to fulfil their career objectives, he believes the benefits of Career Coaching are clear:
