Engineers Ireland President appointed to Government Innovation Taskforce
Engineers Ireland President Dr Chris Horn is one of six engineers appointed by an Taoiseach Brian Cowen to a Government innovation taskforce.
Dr Horn has been appointed along with 5 other engineers to the team with responsibility for positioning Ireland as an international innovation hub and assist in making Ireland's "smart economy" a reality.
The other engineers on the taskforce include: Lionel Alexander Hewlett Packard, Michael Carmody Institute of Tralee, Dr Burton Lee Innovarium Ventures, Mark O’Donovan Raglan Capital and Barry O’Sullivan Cisco Systems. Read More on IrishTimes >
Water Dominates Winning Engineering Innovations
A system that provides critical information on water quality for local authorities and an open-centre electricity-generating tidal turbine were the winning concepts at the Engineers Ireland Innovation Awards 2009.
Denis O’Connor has won the ‘Innovative Engineer of the Year’ award for developing an integrated environmental water management system for local authorities while OpenHydro won the ‘Innovative Company of the Year’ award for its design of an open-centre turbine that can generate electricity from ocean tidal streams in a simple, efficient and environmentally-friendly manner. Nicola Greene won the student category of the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) Sustainability Award and Mesut Dogan won the professional engineer award in the same category. Read More >

Engineers Ireland has announced plans to waive the charge to companies wishing to advertise engineering jobs on its website. The proposal, one of many implemented by the body as part of its support plan for unemployed members, aims to turn the website into a central bank for all engineering vacancies in both Ireland and abroad.
