Mission

Ahoy there! Welcome to the Summer Challenge!

If you are aiming to complete the Trefoil Engineering E-Badge (all three challenges) this is your third and final challenge!

If you are here for the first time – welcome and we hope you have lots of fun engineering!

It’s summer! This means long evenings and (in theory) nice weather… It also means you can meet back with your units – YAY!

This is the perfect challenge to celebrate all things summer and engineering. You can do it in your group or individually.

The challenge is to create an Engineering Treasure Map in your local area. So this means:

1. Local Engineering Landmarks:

Pick out some Engineering Landmarks or Pit-stops in your local area. These can be Big and Bold examples of engineering like a castle or power plant. Or it can be something subtle and lesser-known like some nice lipstick in the local pharmacy or the digital ad board at your bus stop. We are all about diversity here in STEPS so be as diverse as you can be with your engineering examples – and if you can name the engineering discipline associated (like civil engineering, electrical, mechanical etc.) that would be very impressive! We have some tips and inspiration in the Resources section below so be sure to check it out before you go hunting!

Each map should aim for a minimum of 3 Engineering Landmarks.

2. Engineering Treasure

Pick one of your Engineering Landmarks and make a homemade replica – ideally from sustainable materials. It doesn’t have to be perfect – it can be impressionistic – and we would love to see you add your own Flair!

This will be your Engineering Treasure.

3. Draw your Map!

Draw a map of your Engineering Treasure Trail marking in your Engineering Landmarks (and other relevant landmarks so someone else could follow your map)

4. E Marks the spot

At your Engineering Treasure Landmark mark your map with a BIG E! This will be where your treasure is hidden.

5. Mascot

The best bit! Pick a Mascot. This could be a teddy or a toy or your favourite fruit with a face on it… anything – get imaginative!

Your Mascot will be your new friend for the Engineering Treasure Hunt and will go everywhere with you. Don’t forget to give them a Girl Guide or Brownie make-over and a great adventurer name - like Dervla Murphy! There will be bonus points for that!

6. Get Treasure Hunting

And you’re off! Map in hand follow your trail and take a photo of you and your mascot at every Engineering landmark.

Take a photo of you and your mascot and your Engineering Treasure (replica) at the Engineering Treasure Landmark.

7. Bonus Challenge!

Hide your Engineering Treasure at the Engineering Treasure Landmark (marked with an E on your map). Give you map to another family member or another team and see they can follow it and then find the hidden Engineering Treasure!

Don’t forget to watch the Mission Video from Mark and Ali on STEPS TV YouTube Channel and don’t forget to check out the Marking Scheme and Resources below!
