Training aim

This course will address the fundamental principles of renewable energy technologies and will bring learners through the basic mathematical, scientific and engineering principles.

Learning objectives

  • Describe the basic units of energy, power and energy transfer, transformation and transmission
  • Discuss the impact that energy and energy sources have on the environment
  • Describe the wind resource, its variability, and the power available in the wind and the siting and planning surrounding wind farms
  • Describe and explain the operating principles of a solar PV and solar thermal system
  • Recognise waterpower technologies and hydropower schemes
  • Describe Tidal Stream Technologies

Course outline

The course comprises 100 hours of lecturer contact time distributed between lecture delivery, in a blended manner with distance learning, or site and laboratory visits which are compulsory and often off site to the Institute.  The course is a 25 ECTS course at HETAC (QQI) level 6.  The modules are:

Introduction to Renewable Energy (2.5 ECTS), Wind energy (5 ECTS), Bioenergy (5 ECTS), Solar and Heat pumps (5 ECTS), Ocean and Hydro (5 ECTS) and a final project of the student's choice (2.5 ECTS).
