Our history
Since 1835, Engineers Ireland has created the standard for the engineering profession in Ireland.
From the beginning
1835
Leading Irish engineers form a society to promote the civil engineering profession and share their experiences.
1844
The organisation becomes the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland.
1877
This body becomes one of the first chartered institutions in the British Isles.
1928
Cumann na nInnealtoiri (The Engineers Society) is founded to advance the prospects and status of its members.
1969
The Oireachtas passes the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland (Charter Amendment) Act, 1969.
After 1969
The Institution of Civil Engineers and Cumann na nInnealtóirí merged to form the Institution of Engineers of Ireland, later rebranded as Engineers Ireland.
The new institution widened its scope to:
- Cater for all engineering disciplines
- Ensure standards in the profession
- Promote engineering as a career
- Encourage Continuing Professional Development for engineers
- Represent the interests of the engineering profession in Ireland and internationally
