A competition was held in Engineers Ireland HQ on Clyde road on 14 December to select two representatives for Ireland at the 26th European Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference, which will be held in Graz, Austria, from 11-14 September 2018. There were seven candidates on the afternoon from academia and industry, all of whom excellent presentations. The winners are:

• Yeganeh Attari (Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions) for 'Predicting Pile Driving-Induced Movements in Extremely Soft Gothenburg Clay'
• Ronan Royston (University of Oxford/Ward & Burke): 'Soil-Structure Interaction Of Large Diameter Caissons'

The European Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference is a forum for young geotechnical engineers and researchers to share their experiences, learn about developing technology and engage with new colleagues. The event is organised on behalf of the International Society for Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering and will be attended by c. 50 delegates from other European countries.
