The STEPS Young Engineers Award
The STEPS Young Engineers Award is a competition for 3rd and 4th-class primary school children to develop a creative engineering project to help improve their local community.
Children are guided through the competition by the STEPS Project Book, which assists them and simulates the experience of a ‘real’ engineering project. They are tasked with identifying a tangible problem, a problem which affects them or those around them. This could be a medical device for a sick relative, an engineered environmental system for a local river or cool additions to the school playground for everyone’s enjoyment, for example. They work in teams to bring their project from inception to completion.
The final optional step of the competition is to present their project to an Engineer Role Model. This is the highlight of the programme for the children, where they receive feedback from a ‘real engineer’. The STEPS Volunteer Engineer Programme matches Engineer Role Models with schools who do not have pre-established engineer contacts.
If you would like to help inspire the next generation of engineers, gain a rewarding CPD experience, and make a positive impact in your community, register for training below!
Note: Training is mandatory for all Engineer Role Models.
