Training aim

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the concepts underpinning the successful design of a natural ventilation strategy.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course the attendee will be aware of the legislative, economic and environmental drivers behind choosing a ventilation strategy. Have an understanding of the design features necessary for a successful natural ventilation strategy, the relationship between buildings design features and parameters, and building environmental performance and the importance of the control of solar and radiant heat gains and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) to occupant comfort and productivity.

Course outline

The course provides an introduction to the legislative, economic and environmental drivers behind choosing ventilation strategy and the advantages and disadvantages of natural ventilation. It covers the key design considerations such as building orientation, envelope and configuration along with discussing types of ventilation strategy and the associated control strategies. There is an overview of the regulatory and design requirements and a comprehensive discussion of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).

Trainer's profile

Declan Alcock is Project Director at Varming Consulting Engineers where he leads the Sustainability team. He holds an MSc in Energy and Sustainable Building Design, is a Certified Passive House Designer and has 15 years' experience of Sustainability in the Built Environment with particular expertise in Dynamic Simulation Modelling. He delivers the “BIM for Sustainable Construction” module the CITA MSc in Construction Informatics.
