Programme Overview

This convenient part-time programme has been designed in collaboration with leading employers to allow hi-potential, technical staff with apprentice and craftsperson skills to develop a range of non-technical skills which are vital for career advancement. Participants will gain insights from industry experts and professional tutors in order that they can appreciate the importance of fully-rounded development in order to cope with the challenges of 21st century projects and processes in a demanding and fast-paced environment.

In particular, participants will gain practical know-how regarding the standards and approaches which are required to optimise their contribution in their workplace; to handle workplace stresses and conflicts; to foster strong and united teams; to demonstrate excellence in their approach to managing projects, including commercial awareness and excellent resource efficiency. Successful completion of the programme will assist participants in accelerating their professional development and their career prospects.

Use of the state-of-the-art facilities at Engineers Ireland supported by:

Online Learning Management System: Engineers Ireland’s Virtual Learning Environment allows self-paced   learning with particular emphasis on materials which can ‘prime’ participants to get the most from the class-room sessions and then provide exercises, materials and ‘Recommended Readings’ afterwards

Expert Tutors: All tutors have been selected for their industry expertise, their acknowledged contribution to the their technical profession and/or their unique knowledge at the forefront of a chosen field

Team-based learning: Participants will benefit immensely from the time away from sites to explore key challenges and issues with their peers and leading senior professionals

Mentoring: Each student is supported by a workplace mentor to guide and optimise their learning

Learning agreements: These are used throughout to ensure the transfer of learning from each module to the workplace in a manner that allows for a measurable and verifiable improvement, to a suitable degree for each participants based on their level of ambition and ability


Programme Structure

The programme is delivered on a part-time basis involving five mandatory classroom sessions, approximately 1 weekday per month, over five months.

Education & Professional Development

Phil Kildea is a trainer, business mentor and executive coach with 20 years’ training experience. He works with clients from a broad range of industries in the Private and Public sectors. He has several qualifications including a Masters of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business Studies (1st Class Hons), a Graduateship in Marketing from MII, a National Diploma in Personnel Management, Graduate Diploma in Executive Coaching, and Certificates in Training and Continuing Education. Phil is a certified NLP practitioner (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and also lectures part time in Business Policy for the Institute of Public Administration (IPA).

Planning & Prioritising and Communicating Effectively

Conor O’Connell has twenty years’ experience in designing and implementing OD interventions with blue chip clients in Ireland and around the world. Currently working with Microsoft, Wyeth Medica, J&J, Oracle, Pfizer, Abbott, GEHealthcare, Accenture, EMC, British Telecom, West LB Bank among many others. The working relationship with these clients in some cases goes back over fifteen years. He has presented, consulted and delivered workshops in Ireland, UK, Europe, USA, Asia, Africa and New Zealand.   He is a partner and Master Trainer with the Time Manager International group (TMI) and runs their Irish operation.

An Introduction to Project Management & Teamwork

Declan Cunningham is one of Ireland's top tutors on the subject of Project Management for engineers. He brings more than 25 years national and international experience as a senior-level Project Manager himself. He completed a Masters Degree in Project Management in the University of Limerick (UL) and now develops and delivers numerous project management training projects with the Centre for Project Management and Engineers Ireland.

Commerical Awareness

Michael Healy is a Commercial Manager with over 25 years’ experience in M & E contracting. He received his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from WIT in 2010 and is currently undertaking an MBS in Lean practise, due for completion in June 2015.

Prior to this he has over twenty years’ experience based in London where he initially completed his electrical apprenticeship, before moving into roles covering estimating, quantity surveying, commercial management, project management and Directorship. He has also been involved in a number of successful start-ups both directly and as an external advisory capacity. He has extensive experience in people management, productivity measurement, risk analysis, commercial management and cash flow management both from a project and companywide perspective.


Participants will perform at their best in the workplace, gaining both an understanding of professional engineering standards and confidence about their career.
