Following the development of the 2021 – 2023 Engineers Ireland Strategy, the Council decided it was timely to review the governance of the institution to ensure Engineers Ireland delivers on our Core Purpose and in the best interests of the profession.

Given the scale of the project, and the expert nature of the issue, external assistance was required across all stages of this project. PwC was appointed to undertake the review following a competitive tender process. They examined all aspects of the governance of the institution from our Bye-laws to the conduct of our meetings to the functioning of our committees.

Following a phased review and consultation process, the Final Report of the Governance Review was presented to Council in December 2021. This report set out the findings and recommendations for a future Governance Model, which includes 12 overarching recommendations for prioritisation and implementation. These recommendations include: clarifying matters reserved for Council and matters delegated to the Executive Board, prioritising discussion on strategic planning, policy and membership matters at Council meetings, documenting the role of the President and Director General, updating Terms of Reference, tenure and reporting arrangements for all Committees and Boards, providing induction training to help Council members and the Executive Board understand their role and function.

In addition to approving the Report, Council also approved the establishment of an Oversight Group of Council to guide the implementation of the recommendations.

The implementation of recommendations advised by PWC is currently underway. Transparency has been an important feature of the Governance Review process to date and members will be updated on changes made in line with the recommendations in the coming months through our newsletters and on social media.
