155_STRUCTURES_CONSTRUCT_REV

The Structures and Construction division is for structural engineers and civil engineers with an interest in professional design practices and contracting roles in both the public and private sectors as well as academia.

The Conservation Register for Engineers (CARE) is for engineers skilled in the conservation of historical structures and sites. It is a joint Register between the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and is administered by ICE. Under a bilateral registration agreement civil and structural engineers who are Chartered Engineer members can join the CARE Register.

The drive to more sustainable pavements: Warm RAP trial on the N80

Dimitris Michailidis and David Hogan discuss their proposal to develop a binder and bituminous mixture which allows Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) mixtures to be produced at lower temperatures in the cold addition process. Alongside the environmental benefits of such an approach, it is also hoped that reduced ageing of the material through the mixing process will result in improved performance.

Why CPD matters to me: Noel Clancy, chief engineer, Marine Engineering Division, Dept of Agriculture, Food and the Marine

Chief engineer Noel Clancy says 'it is impossible to envisage any career progression without substantial engagement in CPD'. It has helped him to keep abreast of topical issues in his area of expertise while providing him with the opportunity to explore other sectors: 'the more you engage the more you will learn, exposing you to new areas of engineering that may lead to a change in "the way we do things" or even in career direction; it also broadens your engineering network, which will stand to you for the rest of your career whatever direction you take'.

Wooden buildings: Using nature's structures

A new approach enables architects to use discarded tree forks as load-bearing joints in their structures.

Design and lifecycle of road pavements: Delivering high-quality assets at minimal cost to consumers and environment

The traditional approach to road pavement design can be traced back to the 1950s in the UK and relied heavily on empirical practice; it was acknowledged at that time that a pavement structure is difficult to model theoretically and incorporates materials with complex mechanical properties, write TII's Tom Casey and Eddie Winterlich.

Radical overhaul of construction industry needed if UK to have any chance of net zero by 2050 – research

My new research reveals that even the best aspects of the UK’s current building plans don’t go nearly far enough, writes Ljubomir Jankovic. We have found that due to embodied carbon emissions – the emissions that derive from making building materials and constructing houses, rather than heating and powering them – only building all new housing using naturally grown materials with negative embodied carbon will allow the UK housing industry to be net zero by 2050.

John Loudon McAdam: The father of the modern road

John Loudon McAdam was a pioneering Scottish engineer who almost single-handedly changed the way roads were built around the world. His innovative shallow camber, crushed, compacted stone layered roads would become the standard for road building throughout the world.
